William Sutton (1800-1882), the son of William and Elizabeth (Treadwell) Sutton, was born in Salem, Mass., on 26 July 1800. Sutton was a successful merchant in Salem, and from 1835 to 1880, president of the Salem Commercial Bank, later called the First National Bank of Salem. He was a trustee or director for a number of institutions and corporations, a member of the Massachusetts state legislature, and an officer in the Salem Cadets.
